Well our new life in Spain has begun. A few years of planning have paid off and winters will be spent in warmer climes. The plans have developed from an idea about 5 years ago, and now we are here.
We have been here a week now. We caught a ferry from Portsmouth to Bilbao. So with the car laden with precious possessions we set off and enjoyed a calm crossing in a well presented ferry-boat. We had a comfortable cabin surprisingly spacious considering the numbers on-board.
To our amazement we also met up with a friend last seen a year ago in Spain, and there he was in the super queue.
As is usual this time of year in Spain, motorways were virtually void of traffic apart from getting out of Bilbao and again passing Madrid. The journey went smoothly and we experienced service station accommodation along the way which was adequate and comfortable.
Unfortunately lack of communication meant the chicken meal ordered came as beef goulash and chips, but never the less tasty. Definitely time needed to learn Spanish!
All was well until we picked up the house keys from the solicitor to discover the electrics weren’t working despite being assured all was in place by the solicitors.
It would seem the electric company work at their own pace here and four days later they turned up to fix the problem to discover the meter had been stolen from a locked cupboard and the electric company has the padlock key. Yes it was missing, but I question who had removed it and when?
Ah well we had an interesting time camping in our house with candles and cold water. Actually we had a very bright street light outside so that helped!
We are now pretty much settled, finding the local stores for requirements, and receiving help from generous English neighbours, although where we are is very much a Spanish community.
Well our new adventure has begun with lots to explore and discover about our new surroundings, not to mention attempting to learn Spanish!
So if you have a dream, make a plan to bring it to fruition, and enjoy your new adventure. We have a lot to learn about the new culture; time to enjoy the warmer weather, the beaches, the harbour, the fiestas etc. If you would like to hear more follow my future articles.
When we have settled into our new lifestyle, it will be enhanced by the growth of my internet business which I plan to make time for despite all the exciting attractions to explore.
